The CIUC Initiates a Series of Internships for Undergraduates of the Faculty of Arts

The Sinopec Fuel Oil Lanka (Private)Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sinopec Fuel Oil (Singapore) Company started operations in Sri Lanka in 2019. In 2020 Hambantota Oil Depot successfully completed the first shipment of 25,000 tons of low-sulfur fuel oil for ships, marking the successful entry of Sinopec’s ship fuel supply business into Sri Lanka, an important market along the “Belt and Road”. Since its establishment, the Lanka Company has mainly traded heavy and light fuel oil for ships, established close ties with local ship fuel supply companies, and leveraged the advantages of Sinopec’s integration to provide continuous and stable oil products for Sri Lanka. On May 22, 2023, Sinopec and the Ministry of Energy of Sri Lanka signed the “Long-Term Contract for Import, Storage, Distribution and Sales of Oil Products” at the Presidential Secretariat. According to the contract, Sinopec will have 20-year oil supply rights for 150 gas stations.

The recent visit of the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Colombo Professor Ma Zhongwu to the Sinopec Fuel Oil Lanka (Private) Limited paved the path for multi-dimensional cooperation between the university and the enterprise. The General Manager Yu Yuhua mentioned their willingness to introduce internships for our undergraduates following Chinese language courses in the Faculty of Arts. Prof. Ma briefed out the new working strategy and objectives of the CIUC especially the new ideas for future development of CIUC through where he tried get more rewarding opportunities for our undergraduates at the Sinopec. Yet, the CIUC agreed to provide its service to local employees at the Sinopec especially to give them the Chinese language proficiency and culture awareness. The main purpose of the new ‘working therapy’ of the CIUC is to convert the CIUC as a high quality institute where focusing on Chinese language education and culture promotion in particularly.

General Manager Yu Yufei welcomed Prof. Ma’s concept of University-enterprise partnership and further emphasized that it would be more beneficial when reqruting local employees to the Company. It will assist in cultivating “localized” core talents, and the improvement of overall quality of local employees. The Sinopec willing to recruit 85% of skillful local employees in the future.

Mr. Cheng Anxiang, the Deputy General Manager of Sinopec Fuel Oil Lanka (Private) Company, Mr. Meng Sichen, Business Representative and Ms. Chang Xiaojin, Administrative Assistant of CIUC also participated in the discussion.
